Independence does not require handling every challenge alone, according to an article published by Psychology Today. Asking for help can mean seeking a different perspective, hearing new ideas, having someone listen, or simply not facing a difficult moment alone.

The article’s author describes finding it difficult to ask for support, partly out of concern about inconveniencing others and feeling less capable. But those feelings do not mean that accepting help is a weakness. The author argues that recognising when support is needed can be a sign of strength and vulnerability.

The article points to a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis, which found an association between perceived social support and better mental and physical health. It also cites a 2017 review suggesting that providing support can benefit the person offering it as well as the person receiving it.

Accepting help does not mean handing someone else responsibility for solving a problem, the article says. It can allow people who care to offer meaningful support. Independence, in this view, includes recognising personal limits and being willing to let others stand alongside you.
